Me and Forrest were very kindly invited along to a term of sing and sign classes for babies. We have been attending every Friday morning and we are absolutely loving the classes!
We have completed 4 sessions with Sarah now and Forrest has recently started using his first signs for āmilkā and āwhereā. I had previously tried teaching Forrest the sign for āmilkā before attending these classes and he wasnāt picking it up but with a few pointers from Sarah and knowing the rules to follow when teaching babies sign language, he picked it up within a few weeks!
I love the little mum community there, everyoneās so lovely, chatty and supportive, it doesnāt feel like just a class. When we first get there I let Forrest chill and get used to where we are whilst chatting to Sarah and the other mums. Itās so nice to have this time before we start, it definitely makes me feel more at ease!
We then get straight into the class, singing and signing a welcome song and saying hello to everyone. Forrest is quickly getting used to the songs, we even play them at home through Spotify and heās started signing along to them, clapping his hands and waving hello. It melts my heart to see him so happy joining in.
At the near start of each session, a certain topic will be introduced and the signs to go along with it are shown. The session then focuses on these new signs but also recaps previous signs as repetition is key when it comes to our little ones learning sign language.
Forrest loves when Jessie cat comes out of the box, the week weāve just been to included peak-a-boo with Jessie and all the babies loved that. He says hi to her and all the babies take it in turn to say hello to Jessie. There are books and songs that include Jessie so itās nice for the babies to have that association with a soft toy.
By far Forrestās favorite bit of the class is when the instruments come out! Heās has a bit of an obsession with the snail shaker (itās now on his Christmas list) or goes for the maracas šŖ. He is encouraged to pick his own instrument from the basket which he likes to do.
Another firm favorite is when a toy which goes with the sign of the week comes out. Again they are able to pick out of a bag which one they would like and we go through each of the toys with the babies and do a song on each whilst signing the object they have. This works so well as Forrest can see what it is and see the sign and then he can link them together helping him to learn what we are showing him.
Iāve really found signing very beneficial for at home. Now Forrest is crawling as well it is helping with communicating to him what he can and canāt do. I love watching him learning and picking up the signs, doing them himself in order to communicate his needs with me correctly and positively.
We still have lots to learn but we are having the best time at these sessions and canāt wait to explore more songs and signs!
